Travel is Broadening

November 29th, 2011

When I was 23, I chose to serve a mission for my church, and filled out the paperwork to go.  Our church has an interesting way doing missionary work; the missionary pays to go, and the church decides where to send the missionary.  So I had no idea where I would go when I filled out the paperwork expressing a desire to serve, but figured it would be somewhere local. Imagine my surprise when I was asked to go to Ukraine!   After 12 weeks of language training and preparation to teach, I was flown to Ukraine where I spent 17 months. It was a beautiful place!  The people were (for the most part) very welcoming, and kind, and I had a wonderful time.  Of course, I spent the majority of the time on church work, whether proselyting, or helping the church members with the everyday church affairs, but we had one day a week free for personal time, and I got to do some traveling.  I spent a day at Yalta in the Crimea, which is where Stalin met with other Allies during World War 2; I spent a day exploring Kharkov, seeing the beautiful old churches, war monuments, and oddly orderly forests; and I spent days in Dnepropetrovsk, exploring museums and seeing other beautiful churches.  I’d have to say the trip was worth it, both the religious aspect, and the entertainment aspect.

Door Mechanism Designs for Safe Exit

November 24th, 2011

Fires are terribly destructive; so we must prevent one. However if fire occurs unfortunately, people need easy and quick final exit-escape routes apart- to avert loss of life. Unlike hotel/office rooms, final exit door has extra security arrangement; so there are some problems. To overcome this and facilitate easier exit various devices are provided in buildings. Push bars, push pads, door panic bolts, and automatic sliding doors with electromechanical override are some arrangements. Fire-exit needs lock from outside when premises are occupied; it should be easily open-able from inside in a fire-emergency to let people out easily by suitable door-knob design. Redlam panic bolt, suited for turning single external doors to emergency exit-door, secure the bolt in closed position with a glass tube; once glass is broken bolt slips and unlocks door. Similarly Kingpin bolt works with pulling the door-handle; Kingpin breaks into two letting bolt retract and open the door. Broken pieces remain with bolt only and so there is no fear about injury.

Food Storage

November 24th, 2011

If I could choose a store where I could have a $1000 shopping spree, I would choose Wal-Mart. Yes I know, how very plebian. Only if you are a millionaire. Right now, my husband and I are almost starving students.  I stay at home with our fourteen month old, and my husband is in his last semester for his Bachelors.  We aren’t quite starving students, because we planned and saved lots of money so we could get by on his income until he can get a full-time job, but groceries take a good portion of our savings.  So I would choose Wal-Mart, and get a good supply of food.  If I had a bigger family, I would go with Sam’s Club, but Wal-Mart works for my little family. First I would get some more shelves for storage, and a bigger deep freeze.  Then I would stock up on non-food supplies, like shampoo, soap, and sanitary supplies, all the things I normally buy at Wal-Mart regularly.  Finally, I would stock up on food, specifically canned goods, and things that can be frozen.  That would be enough money to take care of most of the things I buy, apart from things like milk and fresh fruits and vegetables, which don’t keep well.

Marian the Librarian? Not Quite

November 22nd, 2011

I had my first job when I was 16 (working at Dairy Queen), and I quit my most recent job almost five months ago to be a stay at home mom.  My jobs have ranged from custodial work, to Taco Bell manager, to government employee.  My best paying job was the government job, but my favorite job by far (apart from my current, no income job) was when I worked at the information desk at my university bookstore (not in the textbook department, thankfully). I have always loved libraries, and often thought about studying Library Science so I could be a librarian, but I never quite made it.  The bookstore job was awfully close though.  Our bookstore had a very large section of non-textbooks, and was very popular.  I helped people find books they were looking for, put books back where they belonged on the shelves, gave people suggestions for what books they might like, and generally did a lot of what a librarian does do.  I was even allowed to check out books and read them, as long as I returned them in good condition, which was one of the best parts, as I have always been a big reader. If one can’t be a librarian, working at a bookstore can be the next best thing.

Dream Vacation

November 17th, 2011

Ever since 6th grade I have been fascinated with Greece, thanks largely to my 6th grade teacher doing a huge unit on Greek mythology.  The stories seemed to capture my imagination, and I used to go the library, check out books on Greek mythology, and spend hours reading up on them.  It became a family joke that anyone could ask me anything about Greek mythology, and I would know the answer off the top of my head.  Because of this, I have always been interested in going to Greece for a vacation. I would love to fly to Athens and visit all the beautiful old buildings and see the statues and other things, but I think the best part would be to go to the islands associated with Greece. I could imagine I was in the story of Odysseus.  I would love to go on a cruise based as closely as possible on The Odyssey.

Silly little things

November 14th, 2011

Most people don’t know that I beat myself up about silly little things. Like saying the wrong thing. Doing the wrong things at the wrong time. I feel bad for not riding my boyfriend during sex.  Im the person that strives for perfection all the time. Every waking moment of my life I have to be needed I have to do something worth purpose. I hate myself for being shy I want friends I want to socialize. Whats the point of having unlimited texting when you don’t text anyone. People like me once I start talking. But getting me to talk is a hard thing to accomplish. If I have nothing to say I wont say anything. I don’t even initiate small talk. Im that dull..

I think I have nice eyes

November 11th, 2011

This is a sensitive topic.. I think I have nice eyes I guess. I mean im really nice. All the people I know have told me im a motherly person. You walk into my apartment and I feed you ask you if your hungry. Even if im not hungry Ill cook you something, that’s just how I am. I guess im just meant to have kids. Hopefully a big family so I can feel needed. That’s the greatest thing in life for me, is being needed by someone. Its what gives my meaningless life purpose.  Crazy stuff huh? I know.

This past weekend

November 2nd, 2011

This past weekend.. I attempted at meeting my boyfriends friends. It was a huge fail. Im such a shy and timmid person I just sat there.. awkward as ever. Just staring at stuff. Doing nothing. I wanted to text someone. But then I also realized I don’t have any friends. All I have is my boyfriend.. im one of those people that will drop everything for my boyfriend.  I regret it in the end but what can I say im a passionate person that can only limit that passion to one person at a time. But then again im just a loner by nature anyway..
